Asia Pacific Initiative (API) New Identity and Visual Image Design Competition

The Asia Pacific Initiative (API) is a brand new cross-regional programme being implemented by the four IMechE Asia Pacific regions to support young member development. The API includes three main events, namely,

  • Speak Out for Engineering Competition
  • Design Competition for the Visually Impaired
  • Two-day Young Leadership Development Conference

Asia Pacific Initiative (API) is currently the initial name for the programme. This competition is to find what will be an appropriate name/identity and visual image for the event for this year, and for the years ahead.

This API new identity and visual image design competition is therefore launched. We would like many IMechE members to contribute their ideas. In this competition, members are invited to submit ideas of the new identity for the API and also a visual image design for the new identity.

Submission deadline is 31st2013年5月。

Presidential Visit to Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong

The President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Prof. Isobel Pollock, visited Hong Kong last week to meet key organisations in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong province to support the development of the engineering community in these areas. With the Institution’s Hong Kong Branch Chairman, Szeto Ka Sing CEng FIMechE, the President had the opportunity to visit the University of Macau, the Macau Institution of Engineers, the EMS Department of Hong Kong SAR government, the Hong Kong Insittution of Engineers, and key local associations and operations in Guangdong, including the Guangdong Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, the Guangdong Society of Mechanical Engineering, and a visit to the Longxue shipyard.

This visit was also to gain local support for the development of the Asia-Pacific Initiative (API), a series of activities to provide our young engineers and engineering designers a platform to receive well-rounded engineering leadership training. The events will be held in September 2013 in Hong Kong.

Distinguished award presented to Sir Sze Yuen Chung

During the visit, the President had the great pleasure of awarding the Honourable Sir Sze Yuen Chung the Institution’s prestigious James Watt International Gold Medal for his outstanding contributions to engineering, and for his lifelong service to the community.

The award was established in January 1936 to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of the famous engineer, James Watt. The first recipient in 1937 was Sir John Aspinal, Railway Engineer and past President of the Institution. Other distinguished recipients have included Henry Ford, Sir Frank Whittle, and Sir William Stanier. To receive this medal the recipient must be an individual who has achieved international recognition both through their work as a mechanical engineer, and through the ability with which they have applied science to the progress of mechanical engineering.

Sir Sze Yuen Chung has been a long-standing and eminant role model and mentor for many engineers in Hong Kong. Over the past sixty years, Sir SY has played a pivotal role in the engineering, educational, economic, social, and political development of Hong Kong. Through his dedication and commitment to improving the wellbeing of the Hong Kong people and industry, Sir SY is a living testament of what an engineer can do to enhance every facet of life.

IMechE Asia Pacific Initiatives (API) 2013

To become a good engineering leader working in the engineering industry at the current time, an engineer only possesses technical skill is not sufficient to manage and drive his/her business and tasks successfully and smoothly, other soft skills such as marketing, presentation and negotiation are all important.

In view of such shortage of skills of current young engineers, IMechE NEAR will initiate the organization of a Young Engineer Programme - Asia Pacific Initiatives (API) 2013 comprising:

Asia-Pacific Regional Design Contest

Asia-Pacific Regional Speak Out for Engineering

Asia-Pacific Regional Young Leadership Camp

The programme is planned to be held in Q4 2013 tentatively in Hong Kong.

More information will be released at a later stage.
