PAKISTAN GROUP: YOUNG MEMBERS PANEL

The Young Member Panel of IMechE Pakistan Group constitutes of a dynamic mixture of Affiliate and Associate member volunteers who plan and organize various engineering-oriented challenges, competitions, seminars etcetera throughout the year. The Panel promotes and facilitates industry-academia collaboration and arranges activities that would help groom the young engineers for their professional careers. In addition, the panel liaisons between the Pakistan Group Executive Committee and the 6 Student Chapters across Pakistan for efficient planning and execution of events.

In 2019, North and South YM Panels were additionally established, in order to increase the outreach to YM across Pakistan, to better facilitate them and to create a stronger network of young engineers guided by senior Members of the Institution.

Our portfolio of events, although well established and tested, is reviewed every year and the learnings from previous executions implemented. The major events in our portfolio constitute of:

Abul Kalam Design Challenge

AKDC, based on the Design Challenge being run by IMeche UK, focuses on giving the freshman engineering students an opportunity to experience a complete product development cycle from the initial design, to the fabrication, testing and product presentation. The students design a solution for a real-life engineering problem while staying within the constraints given. The Challenge was launched in 2017 in IMechE SMME Chapter as part of the course curriculum, and has since expanded to include 3 more chapters across Pakistan and a total of more than 100 teams. The National Finale for the Challenge has been organized twice, with thesponsorship of Hub Power Company Limited. The Challenge is run every year with the guidance and advice of Dr. David Ball, Founder Design Challenge UK, who also attended the Finale in person in 2018.

Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Presentation Competition

SOfE Pakistan is the part of the global network of SOfE Competitions being organized by IMechE UK, for YM of the Institution. The competitions seeks to challenge and groom the verbal and visual communication skills of the participants in explaining Mechanical Engineering based concepts. SOfE Pakistan starts of with a Local Heat in each student chapter and Industrial Heats (for the graduated YM) in Hub Power Company in the South and Millat Tractors in the North. The winners of the Local and Industrial heat then proceed to the 2 Regional Heats. Finally, the top 3 presenters from each Regional heat compete in the National Heat. The winner of the SOfE Pakistan is sponsored to represent Pakistan in the Middle East and Africa Regional Heat. The winner of the ME&A heat has the opportunity to compete in the Global Heat of the Competition.

Jibran Khalid Memorial Leadership and Communication Challenge (JKMLCC)

JKMLCC was lauched in 2018 as global competition to test and develop the Leadership and Communication skills of the Participants. The Challenge, with thesponsorship of Millat Tractors, has seen participants from Sri Lanka, UAE, Hong Kong and Egypt participate alongside their peers from Pakistan. In its current form, the Challenge tests the presentation skills of the participants, however additional modules are under planning to cover the theme of the competition. The Challenge has been succesfully executed in both 2018 and 2019, and has showcased Pakistan’s Engineering potential to young engineers from around the globe.

Photography Challenge

摄影的挑战是在2020年引入的s a platform for engineering students and graduates to showcase their photography skills as well as creative and observational abilities. The Challenge provides the participants with an Engineering related theme, which the participants then have to capture through their lenses. The theme for 2020 was: “Engineering Marvels at Home”; the Challenge’s first execution was an outright success with over 60 entries from all over Pakistan.

In addition to these main events, each student chapter organize competitions, workshops et cetera for the institution’s members as well. The YM Panel is always working on new events and would love to hear any idea or opportunity that you would like to discuss.
