COVID-19 Engineering

The COVID-19 / Coronavirus pandemic is presenting many challenges for us all as individuals and as members of the engineering profession.

How can you help fight the virus?

Equipment needed urgently: COVID Engineering Alliance (All of Ireland)

Given the multi week length of the COVID19 response the HSE is installing extra utility equipment to provide additional resiliency/backup to their medical gas systems at hospitals across the country and would like to reach out to industry partners and request their assistance to identify unused/spare redundant pieces of equipment (as follows ) that can be released on loan in the next few weeks:

Please treat the request with urgency as the window to install extra equipment is very short given an inability to interfere with existing systems once in use assisting critical care patients. Many ask ‘How can we help’ : here is your chance please be creative in responding

  • Oil Free Air Cooled Air Compressors suitable for Breathing Air Service with/without post compression treatment (dryer / filtration etc)
  • Idle cryogenic oxygen vessels (even if leased from a supplier) with/without evaporators
  • Idle cryogenic industrial gas (nitrogen/argon) vessels (even if leased from a supplier) with/without evaporators
  • Spare/Idle cryogenic evaporators (any gaseous service)
  • Non cryogenic oxygen generators (lab or production scale.
  • Spare MCPs ( Oxygen or other Industrial gases)

Please consider duty/ standby configurations where for a short period (say 6 weeks) redundancy could be sacrificed. Please identify available plant, National HSE will be available to discuss release terms with respective plant managements but please do not let that be a barrier to communicating.

Respondents with offers/questions/suggestions should contact Edith Blennerhassett (ARUP) atedith.blennerhassett@arup.comwho is assisting the coordination of this system redundancy initiative. It is preferred that a utility lead (or equivalent ) for each site that receives this email /request also reply even if they are not able to contribute so a contact list can be developed to simplify follow up for future needs. Engineers with medical gases experience are also welcome to contact Edith if they are available to consult with an alliance of engineering firms formed to support the HSE at this challenging time for Ireland and the world.

For respondents in one corporate entity please forward it to all sites in your Ireland network. If you note a specific site that is missing from the appeal for whom you have a contact please forward it as appropriate.

This is an important request from the COVID Engineering Alliance* that is supporting the HSE with the re-configuration and expansion of their utility systems to address any increase in patient numbers requiring respiratory support over the coming weeks.

Transport: Transport Committee invites contributions on impact of coronavirus on UK transport

The Transport Committee is asking transport workers, stakeholders and members of the public to write to them about the transport issues they face during the coronavirus outbreak.

MPs will explore the impact felt by the industry, its workers and passengers in a rolling programme of work to monitor the impact of coronavirus on UK transport, sector by sector.

The committee is seeking a range of views to suggest areas where more support is needed. This will enable MPs to maintain scrutiny of the Department for Transport and key bodies as the crisis continues.

5月6日,议员们将考虑的问题影响consumers and industry in a detailed look at aviation which will examine the financial position of airlines and airports, address passenger and consumer issues such as refunds, and assess how air travel will work as the restrictions are eased. Witnesses will be confirmed closer to the date. Among subsequent sessions, MPs will look at rail, local transport and national infrastructure projects.

Chair of the Transport Committee, Huw Merriman MP, said:

“Coronavirus has changed our lives and will continue to make itself felt for some time. Aviation, rail, local transport, national infrastructure projects, the travel industry – those who work in transport and those who use it – have all felt the impact of Covid19.

“As the situation continues to develop, we’re keen to hear of developments and issues across the different transport sectors. You might work in transport, use local services or fear for services. Perhaps you’ve been forced to change travel plans or are concerned about regular journeys you make. We’re asking you to tell us what the issues are.

“We will begin with aviation and will move on to other sectors such as rail and local transport. Thank you in advance for your help. We will be using the insight from your submissions to help us frame our work in this area.”

The Committee has already questioned the Secretary of State, Grant Shapps MP (March 25) and ministers Chris Heaton-Harris MP and Baroness Vere (April 7).

Please write to the Committee via thewebsite inquiry page. Submissions should be no more than two pages. Your submission may be published but please make clear if you would prefer it remains confidential. The committee regrets it cannot deal with individual cases.

How to volunteer across the UK

NHS needs engineers

The NHS has appealed for engineers to support work at huge new hospitals being set up to care for coronavirus patients.

NHS England appealed for volunteers with a range of engineering skills to help keep frontline services running.

England: NHS Volunteer Campaign

NHS志愿者活动是一项新的倡议which looks to help the 1.5 million Britons with underlying medical conditions who have been asked to stay at home for the next 12 weeks. NHS volunteers will be carrying out "simple but vital" roles:
  • Community response volunteer: This role involves collecting shopping, medication or other essential supplies for someone who is self-isolating, and delivering these supplies to their home.
  • Patient transport volunteer: This role supports the NHS by providing transport to patients who are medically fit for discharge, and ensuring that they are settled safely back in to their home.
  • NHS transport volunteer: This role involves transporting equipment, supplies and/or medication between NHS services and sites, it may also involve assisting pharmacies with medication delivery.
  • Check-in and chat volunteer: This role provides short-term telephone support to individuals who are at risk of loneliness as a consequence of self-isolation.
