Welcome to the Yorkshire Eastern Area

Allan Hunt - Chair

The IMechE Yorkshire Eastern Area has an active and growing committee with a diverse membership across a number of industries linking with local industry and academia. The ongoing existence of this local IMechE committee is attributable to the hard work and dedication of these volunteer committee members who organise the annual local events programme and implement the IMechE policies.

Dear local members (and anyone who is interested),

I became an active member of the local area shortly after after moving to Yorkshire in 2013, starting as ordinary member, then Industrial Liaison, Vice Chair and took over the helm of the Area committee in 2021.

As we move beyond the difficulties of the last couple of years to the challenges of the current one, I am optimistic in the ability of engineering to be a force for good in all our lives and

The East Yorkshire Area has much to shout about as many forward-thinking engineering businesses, each of whom are innovating within their respective fields, continue to make significant investments within the local area. The scope and scale of this was exemplified in the presentation given by Alan Brattan for the 100th Anniversary of the Yorkshire Area in 2021.

The IMechE local active members will remain focused on delivering the Institution's message of ‘improving the world through engineering’ by working with our contacts within these businesses. The active members continue to meet on a monthly basis. The paradigm shift towards slicker, more coherent, online provisions for training and STEM combined with the educational and employment challenges seems to offer a powerful opportunity for the institution and its members to be a force for support, mentoring, guidance, and change moving forward. We will also strive to maintain our links with Hull University and our colleagues in the IET, ICE, IChemE and RAES.

I would like to personally invite IMechE members or potential members to contact me if they wish to get involved (this is a particularly good time as our AGM will be held in April) or just want to know what we do or simply give constructive feedback. Taking more of an active role would suit those who wish to become professionally registered, engage in CPD, host a visit, have a passion to develop and engage young engineers or are simply interested in socialising and networking with fellow engineers and business leaders. We would also welcome suggestions for technical visits or recommendations for speakers for our future event programmes, either locally or as part of the core IMechE offerings.

Best Regards,

Allan HuntCEng MIMechE
