HyNet is the UK’s leading industrial decarbonisation cluster, integrating carbon capture and storage with production, distribution, storage and end use of hydrogen at scale. This project will deliver low carbon hydrogen from 2025 and by 2030 will save 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and deliver enough hydrogen to replace almost half of the North West region’s current natural gas demand. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and how it provides a template to deliver a key element of our 2050 obligations.

The project was conceived and is led by local company Progressive Energy, working with UK and international partners. Unlocking the hydrogen economy has included delivering HyDeploy, the UK’s first operational demonstration of blending hydrogen into the UK gas network and trialling conversion to hydrogen with big industrial users. The HyNet project includes construction of the UK’s first CO2transport and storage infrastructure, delivery of 1GW of low carbon hydrogen production and hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure.

Chris is an energy expert with a particular focus on taking innovative technologies from concept to deployment. Much of his work has been driving forward projects in the low carbon energy sector, notably as leading development of HyNet’s low-cost low-carbon hydrogen production at Stanlow, and the delivery of the HyDeploy project which is blending hydrogen into the UK natural gas distribution system. He has also headed up Progressive’s waste and renewables developments, in particular focused on production of low carbon fuels. He has a strong technical background, combined with skills in forming consortia and bringing stakeholders together to enable project delivery.
